Afghanistan: 800 dead, over 2,500 injured - your help counts now

A strong earthquake has destroyed entire villages - families urgently need water, food and emergency accommodation.

Emergency aid for earthquake victims in Afghanistan - ora Kinderhilfe supports

The day before yesterday, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 shook eastern Afghanistan. The epicenter was in Basawal, about 27 kilometers from the city of Jalalabad. Entire villages were destroyed within a few seconds. The provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman were particularly affected.

According to initial estimates, around 800 people lost their lives and more than 2,500 were injured. However, these figures are provisional and are rising by the hour, as many places are still under rubble and the recovery work is continuing.

Entire villages in ruins

In the particularly hard-hit province of Kunar, hundreds of houses in the districts of Nurgal and Chawkay have been destroyed or severely damaged. Families are trapped under collapsed buildings while relatives and aid workers desperately search for survivors.

The region is difficult to access: landslides and rockfalls block important access roads. Many villages are completely cut off from the outside world. Rescue teams are using ambulances, helicopters and mobile teams to try to bring as many injured people as possible to the nearest hospitals.

The plight of families and children

Children and families are particularly vulnerable in this situation. Many have lost their homes, some children even their parents. Without emergency shelters, they have to spend the night outdoors without sufficient blankets, food or clean drinking water.

In addition to the acute danger to life, there is now also the threat of an outbreak of disease due to the lack of clean water and the limited availability of medical care. People are desperate - and every hour counts.
