Kenya Watamu

Kenya is considered the economic engine of East Africa. The country is the world's largest exporter of black tea. Every third cut flower sold in Europe comes from Kenya. Over one million tourists visit the vacation destination every year.

The plight of the population

Kenya has recorded constant economic growth of 6% in recent years. The majority of the population has remained unaffected by this. In Kenya, almost half of the population lives below the poverty line. According to Unicef, more than one in four children under the age of 5 is malnourished. Malnutrition is a major problem.

Kenya is a place of refuge for hundreds of thousands of refugees. The population is growing while agricultural yields are falling. Extreme weather events are exacerbating the situation.

Aids - a major problem

HIV and AIDS are widespread in Kenya. Around 180,000 children are living with the virus. In addition, there are 1.2 million children who have lost their parents to Aids. There is hardly any state support. The only social network is the extended families. If there is no one there to take them in, life begins on the streets. They are denied any kind of childhood or education.

Project work - the Chafisi orphanage

Since 2008, we have been providing a loving home for AIDS orphans near Watamu. We run the orphanage "Chafisi Community Support Organization" with an affiliated boarding school; the "Wings of Mercy School". Two thirds of the pupils live there permanently in safe conditions. Small classes provide them with a good learning atmosphere and loving care.

The orphanage provides the children with healthy food and clothing. Many of them have made it to secondary school or even university from here. Education is the future and creates real prospects.

The bee project

A bee project was launched in February 2021 to offer people additional income opportunities. Here, women in particular are trained in beekeeping. They learn how to breed bees, extract honey and wax, process them and market the products. Kenyan honey is considered a premium product due to its fine aroma. The additional source of income helps the women to secure food for their families.

Our project partner

The orphanage is a community-based organization in Kenya that focuses on the education, nutrition and health of orphans and vulnerable children. In order to achieve this goal, the orphanage works closely with the Wings of Mercy Dabaso Academy, whose director/owner is the vision bearer of the orphanage.

The Wings of Mercy Academy comprises a kindergarten, an elementary school and now also the first classes of the junior secondary school. The school is attended by around 300 pupils.

The classes are small according to the standards of the Kenyan Ministry of Education, with around 30 children, so that the children can also receive individual support. In addition to the daily lessons, artistic club activities and sporting activities are offered in the afternoons.

The "Chafisi Community Support Organization" is also located on the same site. It is more of a boarding school than an orphanage. A total of 40 children live here during school hours and otherwise with their living relatives.

Sponsorship program

The project has been expanded in recent years. Modern classrooms and washrooms as well as new teachers and students have been added. A field is now owned by the school and provides additional support for the pupils.

Sponsors of ora sponsored children play an important role: each sponsor supports their sponsored child personally and at the same time the entire project (salaries, expansion of rooms, new purchases for lessons, seeds, etc.). Over 100 children are now ora sponsored children. We would like to help many more.
