Liberiais located on the western Atlantic coast of Africa and is one of the oldest republics on the continent. 14 years of war have driven the country to ruin. There is no functioning economic, social, health or education system. Over 60 percent of the 5 million inhabitants live below the subsistence level.
The plight of the population
The two civil wars are still having a negative impact on the country's economy today. The political situation is unstable.Liberiais considered a hub for drugs, weapons and money laundering. Corruption runs through all official areas of the country. The 5 million inhabitants suffer as a result.Every second inhabitant goes hungry. Every third child is seriously malnourished and less than one in four has access to a toilet.Malaria is the most common cause of death.
The education system is at rock bottom, as is the healthcare system. Only one in four children attends school regularly.Girls in particular experience a lot of discrimination. They go to school less and experience more violence than boys. Abuse, rape, genital mutilation and early marriage are common practice, especially in rural areas.
In 12 out of 15 districts, children are regularly exposed to violence. This affects more than two million boys and girls. Beaten, kicked, mistreated and abused, their bodies and souls are deeply wounded.
Project work
After we informed 2020 parents and children about theradiofor children's rights via radio, we have been permanently present inLiberiain action. In cooperation with our partner organization YOCEL, we are alleviating the plight of the people in the "Bopulu" region in the village of "Sappimah".
We are particularly active in the following areasnutritionandeducationand help to ensure that people's basic needs are met. The children and their families are provided with sufficient food and drink and medical care. In order to give the girls and boys living there access to education, we are renovating the nearby village school. In addition, we are installing regular school meals so that every child receives a hot meal every day. For some, it is the only meal of the day.

Sponsorship program
In July 2021, we launched our ora sponsorship program in Liberia. Every sponsored child receives healthy food, clothing and school materials. Medical care is also provided.
In order to further expand the projects and to be able to continue helping the families as well as the children, more sponsors are needed. They ensure the expansion of the projects, such as the renovation of the school, and thus provide a perspective.
We are active in the sense of Goal 4 of the global Sustainable Development Goals: Quality education.
