ora children's aid in Malawi

We improve educational opportunities for children!

As ora Kinderhilfe, we are committed to the poorest countries in the world. New in Malawi.

The East African country of Malawi is located on Lake Malawi, the ninth largest lake in the world.Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. It ranks 170th out of 188 on the Human Development Index.More than 70 percent of the 20 million inhabitants, most of whom try to make a living as farmers with small fields, live below the poverty line.

Among them are millions of children. Their suffering is often particularly great and the number of child marriages is high.46.7 percent of girls are married before the age of 18 and the premature birth rate in Malawi is the highest in the world at 13 percent. Although the school enrolment rate of around 88% is one of the best in East Africa, schools are often very poorly equipped and learning levels are low. Many children cannot read, write or do arithmetic, even though they attend school regularly. Only just under 33% of children successfully complete elementary school.

We have been in the rural district of Chikwawa in Malawi. Together with the local organization "Community Focus" (COFO), we are working to improve educational opportunities for boys and girls in Malawi. Education is a matter close to our hearts and the key to escaping poverty and leading a dignified life later on.

The Njira project

Njira means "the way" and the project, which was launched in July 2022, aims to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of underprivileged children in low-performing preschools and elementary school.

In order to achieve this goal, the children's learning level is first determined and then they are divided into groups according to their level (and not according to age or class). We use the "teaching at the right level" approach, which originated in India. Teachers lead a series of engaging learning activities that promote basic literacy and numeracy skills. After three months, the children are reassessed and placed in new groups so that they can continue learning at their new level.

In July 2022, we initially started the project at just one elementary school. We are now planning to transfer the concept to other schools in the area.
