Sierra Leone: How a bicycle enables education - Donate now.

Sierra Leone: How a bicycle enables education - Donate now.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. The consequences of the 11-year civil war and the Ebola crisis are still painfully noticeable today: destroyed houses and abandoned schools bear witness to the poverty in the country. Thousands of people cannot read or write. Many children leave school without basic reading, writing or arithmetic skills. Since 2015, ora Kinderhilfe has been working in the West African country to provide free education and health promotion, especially for children and families.

From March 18 to April 8, 2024, a crowdfunding campaign will take place with Recycling Berlin to help secure the education of over 250 children.

Educational success with the village school

The village of Makulamba in the interior of Sierra Leone is remote and poorly connected. The people suffer from poverty, hunger and a lack of healthcare.

The village school is a ray of hope in the midst of hardship. The adults in the village know: Only a good education can enable their children to escape poverty. Mothers and fathers therefore built the school themselves and laid it brick by brick with heavy physical labor and without the help of machines. ora Kinderhilfe sponsored the building materials and the construction plans, while the villagers did the building work.

Cycling to work

The school is now finished, but none of the teachers live in the village. The seven teachers who teach the 250 pupils live in the next largest town. As there is no public transport, the teachers have to walk a long way to school every day. This challenge poses the risk that lessons are often canceled and teachers quit their jobs due to the hardships. This puts the future of over 250 children at risk.

Opportunities on wheels: Company bicycles

The provision of service bicycles for the teachers and urgently needed school materials improves the educational opportunities of over 250 girls and boys and gives them a perspective for their lives. A bicycle is a robust means of transportation and enables teachers to get to their workplace. Lesson absences are reduced and lessons can take place regularly.

Support our crowdfunding campaign until April 8, 2024 and secure the future of over 250 girls and boys in Makulamba, Sierra Leone.

For every support of at least 10 euros, Berlin Recycling adds another 10 euros from the funding pot until the funding pot is exhausted.

Together we change children's lives.
