Worldwide, 735 million people suffer from hunger. Children are particularly affected. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates from 2023, 45 million children under the age of five worldwide are acutely malnourished and 148.1 million children are not developing in line with their age. In our projects, we are committed to ensuring that children can grow up healthy. Well-nourished children have the chance to learn, play and develop. Our goal is to create a future in which no child goes hungry.
Hunger is more than an empty stomach
Hunger is a constant companion for millions of children. The lack of nutrition poses a serious health risk to the youngest members of our society and stunts their physical and mental development. Infants and young children are particularly affected: chronic malnutrition in the early years can have lasting physical and psychological consequences that significantly affect their future.
Hunger and poverty: a vicious circle
When food is scarce or unaffordable, the future of many children is at risk. In times of need, they often have to contribute to the family's livelihood - whether by working, dropping out of school or, in the worst case, marrying early. Poverty and hunger reinforce each other and restrict the future prospects of millions of children.
A key component of our projects is ensuring adequate nutrition for children and families. A healthy and balanced diet is the basis for good physical, mental and emotional development. Well-nourished children grow better, learn faster, are more resistant to illness and can actively participate in life. In our projects, we support families in implementing sustainable measures in order to defeat hunger in the long term and give children a better future.
Local projects for sustainable food security
Together with our local communities, we initiate agricultural projects, build wells and greenhouses, provide sustainable storage and cooling facilities for harvests and train smallholder farmers in climate-adapted cultivation methods. Our nutrition centers and animal breeding projects ensure that many people are fed. We educate parents and children about what it means to eat healthy food and thus help to prevent malnutrition and maintain health. The children in our projects receive a nutritious and healthy meal every day.
